Crochet Stitch Guide

A clear guide to the most useful crochet stitches for beginners and project makers.

Essential Crochet Stitches

Chain Stitch

The foundation of many patterns. Yarn over, pull through the loop on your hook, and repeat to create a chain.

Slip Stitch

Used to join rounds, move across stitches, or finish edges. Insert hook, yarn over and pull through both loops.

Single Crochet

A firm, neat stitch suitable for dishcloths, amigurumi and beginner squares.

Half Double Crochet

A medium-height stitch that works up faster than single crochet while still making a solid fabric.

Double Crochet

A taller stitch that creates lighter fabric and is popular in scarves, blankets and granny squares.

Granny Cluster

Usually three double crochet stitches worked into the same space, often used in granny squares.

Stitch Practice Plan

  1. Make 20 chains.
  2. Work one row of single crochet.
  3. Turn and work one row of half double crochet.
  4. Turn and work one row of double crochet.
  5. Compare the height and texture of each stitch.

Common Mistake

The most common beginner mistake is accidentally adding or losing stitches. Count your stitches after every row until it becomes natural.
