Beginner Pattern Library

These simple patterns are written for learning and practice. Adjust yarn, hook size and starting chains depending on your tension and project size.

Pattern 1: Simple Crochet Coaster

Level: Easy
Yarn: Cotton
Hook: 4 mm
Time: 20 to 40 min

Stitches: ch, sc

  1. Chain 16.
  2. Row 1: Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and across. You should have 15 stitches.
  3. Rows 2 to 15: Chain 1, turn, single crochet across.
  4. Border: Single crochet evenly around all four sides, placing 2 or 3 stitches in each corner.
  5. Slip stitch to finish, fasten off, and weave in ends.

Pattern 2: Beginner Scarf

Level: Easy
Yarn: DK or worsted
Hook: 5 mm
Shape: Rectangle

Stitches: ch, dc

  1. Chain 24 for a narrow scarf or 32 for a wider scarf.
  2. Row 1: Double crochet in the fourth chain from the hook and across.
  3. Row 2: Chain 3, turn, double crochet across.
  4. Repeat Row 2 until the scarf is the length you want.
  5. Fasten off and weave in ends. Add fringe if desired.

Pattern 3: Classic Granny Square

Level: Easy-Medium
Yarn: Any smooth yarn
Hook: Match yarn
Use: Blankets, bags

Stitches: ch, dc, sl st

  1. Chain 4 and slip stitch to form a ring.
  2. Round 1: Chain 3, work 2 double crochet into ring, chain 2. Repeat 3 more groups of 3 double crochet separated by chain 2 spaces. Slip stitch to close.
  3. Round 2: Slip stitch into the corner space. Chain 3, work 2 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet into the same corner. Repeat in each corner.
  4. Continue adding rounds by working clusters into spaces and corners.
  5. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Pattern 4: Reusable Market Bag Base

Level: Medium
Yarn: Strong cotton
Hook: 4.5 mm
Use: Shopping or beach

Stitches: ch, sc, dc

  1. Make a flat rectangle base using single crochet rows until it is about 22 cm long.
  2. Single crochet evenly around the rectangle for one round.
  3. For mesh body: chain 5, skip 2 stitches, single crochet in next stitch. Repeat around.
  4. Continue mesh rounds until the bag is the height you want.
  5. For handles, chain a long loop on each side and reinforce with single crochet stitches.
